Writer and director Mahendran died today, aged 79. As a tribute to him, here are songs from his iconic 1980 film Johnny, starring Rajinikanth and Sridevi in roles that are considered their career-best. Rajinikanth played the roles of two men with contrasting personalities, and the film introduced us to his style. Sridevi essayed the part of a singer in love with Rajinikanth’s character Johnny.
Johnny ran for weeks and became a hit. Mahendran faced several budget constraints while making this film, and he was also simultaneously shooting for Nenjathai Killathey during the time. The songs and background score were composed by Ilaiyaraaja. It continues to be a favourite album for many of us, with ‘Aasaiya Kaathula’, and ‘Kaatril Enthan Geetham’ being the most popular.
