Happy Vishu to everyone! Our song of the day is ‘Vishukili Kanipoo Konduvaa’ from Ivan Megharoopan (2012), a film inspired by the life of Malayalam poet P Kunhiraman Nair. It is written and directed by P Balachandran, and this song, rendered by Chitra, was considered the highlight of the album. The composition is by Sharreth, whose use of keyboard, violin and flute lifts the mood.
The song is a call to the birds asking them to bring Kanipoo – the flowers which grow in abundance during this time of the year. It marks the arrival of the first day of Medam, which is Chithirai for the Tamil people, and the new year is celebrated as Bizu by Assamese, Novo Bosho by Bengalis. The essence of the festival is the same – it’s a call to welcome joy and prosperity.
