Today is writer Sujatha Rangarajan’s birthday. As a tribute, our song of the day is ‘Vidai Kodu Engal Naadae’ from Kannathil Muthamittal, the 2002 film based on Sujatha’s short story ‘Amuthavum Avanum’. In Sujatha’s career, spanning from 1953 to 2008, he authored over 100 novels, 250 short stories, plays and poems, and his works continue to be republished. He has contributed to films, wrote dialogues for Rajinikanth’s Gaayathri, Priya, Kamal Haasan’s Vikram. He also worked with Mani Ratnam as the dialogue writer of Roja.

Kannathail Muthamittal tells the story of a Sri Lankan girl Amudha, who is adopted by the family of a Tamil poet-engineer and his wife, and Amudha’s desire to meet her mother in the midst of war in Sri Lanka. ‘Vidai Kodu Engal Naadae’ is the song and background score for the scenes showing scores of people leaving their homes as refugees. A mild use of drums and harmony in the song is backed by vocals rendered by MS Viswananthan, Balram and others. ‘Oru Deivam Thantha Poovae’, ‘Vellai Pookal’ from this film are also favourites.
