Today is director SP Muthuraman’s birthday. As a tribute, our song of the day is ‘Vaazhkaiye Vesham’ from his 1979 film Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai. Rajinikanth stars as the eldest son of a single mother who must educate siblings and make ends meet. In this song, he walks the city at night singing of all that life has taught him. This was one of the first films in which Rajini played a mellow role that was not meant to be a commercial entertainer, and it became a turning point in his career.

SP Muthuraman is the only director to have worked with Rajini in 25 films. He also collaborated with Muthuraman, Kamal Haasan and Sivaji Ganesan. He started his career through AVM Productions as an editor in 1955, and has remained part of it ever since. Pokkiri Raja, Netri Kann, Guru Sishyan, Sri Raghavendra, Oru Oodhappu Kan Simittugiradhu are some of his best films.
