Today is K Balachander’s 89th birth anniversary. The veteran director started as a screenwriter in 1964, and directed his first film Neerkumizhi in 1965. In his 50-year career he worked on 100 films, many of them becoming superhits and setting trends in the industry. Among his notable films are Apoorva Raaganal, Avargal, Server Sundaram, Achamillai Achamillai.

Balachander worked with Kamal Haasan on many hits in the 70s and 80s. Varumayin Niram Sivappu is considered one of Kamal and Sridevi’s best movies. The film spoke about the unemployment situation in a city in the 80s, starring Kamal as a well educated youth who doesn’t find a job. The iconic song by SPB is set to lyrics adapted from Bharathiyar’s poem which speaks of a promise that the lover breaks.
