On KS Chithra’s birthday, our song of the day is ‘Oru Raja Vanthanam’ from Mounam Sammandham, a romantic song by Chithra featuring Amala Akkineni, composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The film released in 1990 and marked Mammootty’s Tamil debut. The story was about the wrong conviction of Amala’s brother for a murder, and the efforts taken by lawyer Mammootty to find the truth.
Chithra has had a four decade long career, with over 25,000 songs across languages to her credit. She has received six national awards, five Filmfare Awards and more than 30 state film awards. She was introduced to Malayalam cinema by composer MG Radhakrishnan in 1979, and recorded her first Tamil film song ‘Poojaikketha Poovithu’ for Neethana Antha Kuyil a decade later.
