Happy birthday, director Rajiv Menon! Our song of the day is ‘Ooh La La La’ from Minsara Kanavu, the celebratory song from the 1997 film starring Kajol, Nasser and Prabhu Deva. When AR Rahman brought Chitra on board to sing, he asked her to open her voice completely. Which is why this song is remembered for how free-spirited it is.
Rajiv Menon is known for being fun to work with. He recently directed Sarvam Thaala Mayam, nearly two decades after Kandukondain Kandukondain and Minsara Kanavu. Kajol was 22 when she made her Tamil debut with this film, and in ‘Ooh La La La’, she’s seen thoroughly enjoying herself. Prabhu Deva’s dance is another one of his classics, and AR Rahman is at his best, with chorus, bands, saxophones and rhythm sections in the song.
