Today is SV Ranga Rao’s birth anniversary. He was an actor, director and producer who worked on many notable Telugu and Tamil films such as Bhookailas, Mahakavi Kalidasu, Karpagam and Naanum Oru Penn, and is still best remembered for his role as Ghatotkacha in the 1957 film Mayabazaar.
It’s a delight to watch Ranga Rao in ‘Kalayana Samayal Saadham’ where he grows double his size to be able to feast on the wedding spread with bajji, ladoo, poori kizhangu, puliogarai, puttu, and more. And Savithri’s body language, who plays Ghatotkacha playing Sasirekha in the song.
The film is remembered for its story and performances by the lead actors NT Rama Rao (who played Krishna), Savitri (Sasirekha) and others. It was the first colourised Telugu film. Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, who started his career as an assistant director of this film, later made a film based on the storyline of Ghatothkacha from Mayabazaar. NTR also reprised the role of Krishna in several films after this.
