April 1 is celebrated as Odisha Day, marking the formation of the state in 1936. Our special song of the day is ‘Ele Machi Machi’ from Anbe Sivam, the film which tells the story of two people who meet by chance and make an unexpected journey from Bhubaneswar to Chennai.
The film was written by Kamal Haasan and stars him along with Madhavan as Nallasivam and Anbarasu respectively. Two strangers with contrasting personalities who become close friends. In this song, they are travelling by road, seated on top of a bus in Odisha as they pass by the hills and fields in the region. Anbarasu gets high on bhang with the other travellers, and they have a good time even though they don’t speak or understanding each other’s language.
