Our song for Mothers’ Day is ‘Cherathukal’ from Kumbalangi Nights, the 2019 film written by Shyam Pushkaran and directed by Madhu C. The film centers on four brothers living in a small house in the fishing area of Kumbalangi, and ‘Cherathukal’ is about the longing for a mother that Frankie, a teenager feels. The line, “Makane njanundarikathoru,” says, “Son, I am here, watching over you.” The song is like a lullaby, it starts off with the ambiance set by Sushin Shyam’s orchestral rendition which shines and tenderly transitions into a chorus. The violin interludes, Sithara’s subdued rendition, and her stress on the lyrics, followed by Sushin who leads into a crescendo, make the song stay well after it’s over.
