Actors: Kamal Haasan and others

Savithri and Gemini Ganesan-starring Kalathur Kannama, featuring the debut of Kamal Haasan as a child actor, was censored on this day in 1960. Written by Jawar Seetharaman and directed by Bhimsingh, the film starred Kamal as Selvam, a three-year-old child who grows up in an orphanage and helps unite his parents. The film is best remembered for Kamal’s performance, which won him a National Award, and this landmark song pictured on him. Sung by MS Rajeswari, he calls out to lord Muruga as his mother and father. He later said in interviews that he landed the role by accident, when producer AV Meiyappan of AVM studios heard him narrate a Sivaji Ganesan dialogue from Parasakthi and was won over.
