AR Rahman’s ‘Urvasi Urvasi’, a 1994 song from Kadhalan, continues to have different renditions by various artists, 23 years later. In this modern, techno version of the song, Benny Dayal collaborates with Jasim, an Abu Dhabi-based Indian singer.
The video has the two artists in a set-up full of funky strobe lights and musical equipment around. While Benny Dayal sings AR Rahman’s song, Jasim infuses it with his version of Cheb Khaled’s ‘Didi‘, an Indo-Arabic melding of music and lyrics.
Titled Project Urvasi, the song is a major throwback to the 90s incidentally when both the songs were released.
The comments section of the video on YouTube are more than happy with this version, someone even calling it “swagalicious”. Some felt it sounded a lot like what Calvin Harris would do in his songs, and others felt musician and DJ Nucleya would’ve done a better job.
Nevertheless, it’s a fun song reminded us to employ a “take it easy policy”.
