Tamil Song Of The Day

SOTD – A Moon Story

RedditGoogle+Whatsapp

Gone are the days when kids were enthralled with the story of the vada and the paati who made it. Tamil cinema now has enough moon songs to string an entire story together.

And we did just that.

“Andre Vandhadhum Idhe Nila” from Periya Idaththu Penn

Singer: TM Soundarrajan

Lyricist: Kannadasan

Composer: MS Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy

Starring: MGR, Saroja Devi, MR Radha.

There’s only so much fun you can have with a friend. Even if it is the moon. So, it’s no surprise that soon boredom sets in. And you sing this song.

As the moon readies itself to take you on an adventure, its wet days are a thing of the past.

Or so Hariharan tells us.

“Andha Nilava Thaan” from Mudhal Mariyadhai

Singer: KS Chithra

Lyricist: Vairamuthu

Composer: Ilaiyaraaja

Starring: Sivaji Ganesan, Radha and Sathyaraj

Finally, the moon is within reach. You stretch out and grasp it. Only, you forgot to give your raasa a present. And, so it becomes his gift.

“Eera Nila” from Aravindhan

Singer: SP Balasubrahmanyam

Lyricist: Vairamuthu

Composer: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Starring: Sarath Kumar, Nagma, R Parthiepan.

The moon begins its descent to earth. In tune with the song’s jaunty melody, it casts is shadow on a gleaming river. And so, it gets wet.

You begin to cry. Because, well, you’re Nagma. And your husband, Sarath Kumar, is missing.

“Nilavu Thoongum Neram” from Kunguma Chimizh

Singer: SP Balasubrahmanyam

Composer: Ilaiyaraaja

Starring: Mohan, Ilavarasi.

Your singing has had no effect on the moon thus far. She sleeps peacefully, far far away. Out of your reach. And so what do you do? You sing the moon a lullaby. And you get SPB to do it.

“Nilave Vaa” from Mouna Raagam

Singers: SP Balasubrahmanyam

Lyricist: Vaali

Composer: Ilaiyaraaja

Starring: Mohan, Revathi.

At first, you ask for the moon. And wait by a gorgeous Delhi house, in a white kurta. As SP Balasubrahmanyam belts out an Ilaiyaraaja tune at its mournful best.

Then, you look suitably sad.

Finally, you throw in enough clues to your distressed state of mind that the moon knows that only it could solve all your problems.

But, will it come? That’s a question only the next song can answer.
