Song Of The Day: ‘Nee Kaatru Naan Maram’ From ‘Nilave Vaa’

Singers : Hariharan,  KS Chithra

Composer: Vidyasagar

Lyricist: Vairamuthu

Starring:  Vijay, Suvalakshmi

A mellifluous song where in Vijay and Suvalakshmi use similes (Thank you, Vairamuthu) to further their romance — this track composed by Vidyasagar has Hariharan and KS Chithra in peak form. The composer barely uses orchestration as Hariharan and Chithra’s vocals reign supreme. Meanwhile, Vijay in his spectacle-wearing era, runs around bridges and grasslands with Suvalakshmi’s artfully tousled hair trailing far, far behind.

The lyrics are interesting as well.

‘Nee Kaatru Naan Maram

Enna Sonnalum Thalai Aattuven’

(You are wind; I am a tree. I will agree to whatever it is you have to say.)

Vijay is obviously in the throes of romance when he sings this in a room full of his college friends. As is Suvalakshmi, considering the way she runs across the college to hear Vijay sing.

This is an early Vidyasagar gem, and as such, is a prime example of the composer’s mastery over slow melodies. Later in his career, he’d go on to make ear-splitting shrill music for Vijay’s Kuruvi, but all that will be forgotten and forgiven, if one listens to this.
