Song of the Day: Mazhai Varum

Song: Mazhai Varum from Veppam

Singer: Suzanne D’Mello

Composer: Joshua Sridhar

Lyricist: Na Muthukumar

Starring: Nani, Nithya Menon

The Setting: A xerox kadai girl and a local youth transform into Cinderella and Prince Charming respectively for an overseas duet. Ballgowns and sneaky kisses abound.

The Film: Veppam was quite the unusual debut for Anjana Ali Khan. A gritty tale of two friends and the dark paths they take, the film didn’t quite win the accolades it set out to. With Karthik Kumar, Nani, a very under-utilised Nithya Menon and Bindu Madhavi, the movie was bursting with vivacious, young talent, and yet failed to convert that to box office magic. Nonetheless, it will always be known for the Tamil debut of Nani, and Joshua Sridhar’s pleasant score.

The Song: Mazhai Varum has a sweet and simple melody at its core enlivened by that beautiful Violin segment. Though it is not by any means the best that Joshua Sridhar can do, it is nonetheless a small reminder of the kind of work he did in films like Kaadhal and Kalloori. Suzanne D’Mello’s voice doesn’t need orchestration, and she proves it once again in this song. She gives the chaste Tamil words a western twist with her breathy voice in contrast with the Carnatic influence of the Violin segment.
