Tamil Nadu Government Hikes Price Of Movies Tickets By 25%

For the past one week, the film industry has been in a state of flux. The Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council (TFPC) decided not to release any new films in the wake of the government’s decision to impose a local body tax of 10 percent on Tamil films releasing in the state on top of the 28 percent Goods and Service Tax (GST).
Following this, the maximum ticket price in multiplexes and air-conditioned theatres in Chennai would now be Rs. 160 while the minimum will be Rs. 50. These new prices will come into effect from October 9.

This order is reportedly based on the findings of a high-level committee appointed to look into the issue earlier this year. This was done following the indefinite stir announced by the Tamil film industry in July this year, protesting the imposition of GST.

Following the stir, the ticket prices were changed from the base price of Rs 120. One ticket then cost Rs 153 inclusive of 28 percent GST. An additional charge of Rs 30 was imposed in case of online booking. For tickets less than Rs 100, a GST of 18 percent was imposed.

This prompted the film industry to withdraw its strike.

For multiplex and air-conditioned theatres in Chennai, the maximum ticket price would be Rs. 160 while minimum Rs. 50.

According to the new order, non-AC theatres can charge a maximum of  Rs 120 and a minimum of Rs 40; multiplexes and AC theatres located outside Chennai can charge upto Rs 140. The minimum ticket price is Rs 50.
