SOTD: The Machaan Songs

There’s no shortage of machaans, machis, and machinis in Kollywood. That’s just as it should be. Meanwhile, Tamil film lyricists did the one thing they always do – they wrote songs about them. From the large collection of machaan songs, here’s today’s song of the day:

“Karutha Machaan” from Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu

Singers: S Janaki

Music Composer: Ilaiyaraaja

Lyricist: Muthulingam

Starring: Suganya

The Karutha Machaan is totally a different breed. In this film with its very agricultural title, the machaan is super-tanned from all his toiling in the sun.

And hence, the song.

“Machaana Paathegala” from Annakili

Singers: S Janaki

Music Composer: Ilaiyaraaja

Starring: Sivakumar, Sujatha, Phataphat Jayalakshmi.

The Machaan songs to beat all Machaan songs. This folksy number is from Ilaiyaraaja’s debut as music composer, and is a hit with the audience even today.

“Machaana Paarudi” from Thanga Magan

Music Composer: Ilaiyaraaja

Starring: Rajinikanth, Purnima Bhagyaraj, Anuradha

Watch for Rajinikanth’s gold shirt. Stay for Poornima’s dance moves. A quick trip down memory lane to the time when Rajinikanth was the baddest machaan around, this song is all things catchy and energetic.

“Yaaruda Machaan” from Thottal Thodarum

Singers: Vandana Srinivasan, Sathya Prakash

Music Composer: PC Sivan

Starring: Adithi, Thaman Kumar

Light bulbs compete for attention with Aditi, as she sings about finding the machaan she loves. Obviously, Thaman Kumar (the machaan) joins her for a duet later on.

“Yethi Yethi” from Vaaranam Aayiram

Singers: Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer, Solar Sai

Lyricist: Na Muthukumar

Music Composer: Harris Jayaraj

Starring: Suriya, Divya Spandana

A song about the ‘youth’ version of machaan – the machis and the various things they do to while away time. A study really of a rare type of beast – the Tamil teenagers.

“Machaan Meesai Veecharuva” from Dhill

Singers: Pushpa Sriram

Lyricist: Pa Vijay

Music Composer: Vidyasagar

Starring: Vikram, Laila, Papilona

An item song quite like all other item songs, this one too had a junior artiste dancing away onscreen, surrounded by half-drunk machaans.

“Vaa Machaney” from Irudhi Suttru

Singers:  Sean Roldan

Lyricist: Muthamizh

Composer: Santhosh Narayanan

Starring: R Madhavan, Ritika Singh

A quirky little song in which Roldan is let loose by music director Santhosh Narayan. Muthamizh’s lyrics make this song instantly catchy.
