The Busan International Film Festival has nominated three Tamil films in different categories for its 20th edition – in addition to director Mani Ratnam’s Oh Kadhal Kanmani and Biju Viswanath’s Orange Mittai, Radiopetti, directed by Hari Viswanath, has been nominated in the category ‘New Currents’, which is awarded to the two best feature films from the first or second works of new Asian directors. This year eight films from ten countries will be competing for the award. Radiopetti tells the story of an old man and his radio set, and thematically addresses the alienation of the elderly from a unique perspective. Other films in the category include Nakamura Takuro’s West North West (Japan), which explores the subtle feelings of love and friendship between three young women, and Lee Seung-Won’s Communication & Lies (Korea), a film about a man and a woman who do absurdly crazy things.

The 2015 edition begins on October 1 and ends on October 10 and will screen 304 films from 75 countries. The inaugural film is also an Indian film, Mozez Singh’s Zubaan, which explores the contradicting sides of human nature, through the story of a young man’s quest for self-discovery and meaning. Other Indian films at the festival include Meghna Gulzar’s Guilty (Talvar) and Neeraj Ghaywan’s Fly Away Home (Masaan). Guilty revolves around the widely publicised murder of 14-year old Aarushi, while Masaan is a love story set on the banks of the Ganges.
SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali will also be screened at the festival, with a special international edited version by Vincent Tabaillon, editor of The Incredible Hulk (2008).
