Twitter recently launched an emoji dedicated to Mersal. Now, the film’s title has been trademarked by its makers — a first for a South Indian film.

Hema Rukmani of Sri Thenandal films told Silverscreen, “We want to save the originality of the title. We have put in a lot of effort to make the movie and should not miss certain basic things. We shouldn’t allow the unauthorised use of the title. Also, this is a landmark film for both Thenandal and Vijay and we wanted to make it special. That’s why we trademarked the title.” This was not done for any monetary benefit, she added.

Apart from registering the film in Producers’ Council and Film Chamber, trademarking will avoid instances of others misusing the title or someone else claiming that they have registered it first.
Mersal emoji is now popular with Vijay’s fans on social media. This is Thenandal’s 100th film and Vijay’s 25th year in the film industry.
Mersal‘s audio was launched recently amid much fanfare and the film is scheduled to hit the screens this Deepavali.
