Kamal Haasan: “I’ve Joined the 100-Crore Club”

Kamal Haasan, 100-Crore

Kamal Haasan has responded to a Rs. 100 crore lawsuit filed against him by the Puthiya Tamizhagam with a tongue-in-cheek remark. He said that he was one of the first actors to join the 100-crore club.

Political party Puthiya Tamizhagam and its founder K Krishnaswamy are suing Kamal Haasan, and Vijay TV for allegedly hurting the sentiments of a community of people. The case was filed after  Gayatri Raghuram used the word “cheri” on an episode of Bigg Boss Tamil

Krishnaswamy has claimed Rs. 100 crores as damage, from both the channel and Kamal Haasan.

DNA reports that Kamal responded to the lawsuit by saying, “I have joined a 100-crore club that no actor in India, it seems, will dare join. In my opinion this is a venerable 100-crore club too. It creates new stars of avarice on the opposite side, who sue for money and notoriety. They are surely assured infamy, though sadly may be not any money at all. I am not paying anything.”

Krishnaswamy had earlier forced Kamal Haasan to change the name of his film, Virumandi. The original title was Sandiyar, which the party leader claimed was causing damage to a community. Kamal Haasan referred to this too. He said, “In this case it is the same noble man who fought to change my film’s name Sandiyar at someone’s behest. They said the title glorifies rogues and thugs. Where was his wrath when a few years later a film with the same name was released?”

Around the time of the Virumandi controversy, a video – allegedly of a drunk Kamal Haasan – went viral on YouTube. In the video, Kamal goes on an entertaining rant on the concept and idea of culture, and gives us a sneak peak into the making of Virumandi

Here, however, Kamal ends with this: “This gentleman (Dr K Krishnaswamy) speaks on command and stays by the heel on command. I am a different animal ….born free and will fight to live and die that way.”
