‘I Welcome All Feedback As Long As It Does Not Get Personal’: Hari On ‘Saamy Square’

Saamy² Movie Stills Starring Vikram

At a time when big-budget films seek a long weekend or a festival to release, to bank on the first weekend collections, Hari’s Vikram-starrer Saamy Square will release on September 21. The film, a sequel to the blockbuster cop film Saamy, has Bobby Simhaa essay the antagonist while Keerthy Suresh and Aishwarya Rajesh play the female leads.

Director Hari is not too worried about the timing of release, because he believes the movie has a ready audience that will watch the film. “Saamy was very popular all over Tamil Nadu. People wholly identified with the cop who’d go to any lengths to ensure justice prevailed. At a time like this, they will be even more excited to reconnect with Saamy and Bhuvana (Aishwarya Rajesh steps into Trisha Krishnan’s shoes for the sequel),” he says.

The sequel doesn’t exactly pick up where the previous one left, but will share the same milieu. “I’m sure you’ve guessed that the villain in this film is related to Perumal Pichai. It is primarily a tale of revenge. This gives the whole film a frenetic pace, which I believe is necessary to sustain the audience attention.”

Smartphones have further diluted the attention span of the audience, Hari says. “So, it’s up to the directors to figure out ways to draw them into the film’s world. We can only do that if we send out ‘shock’ scenes and thrilling sequences. We filmmakers have to adapt to suit the audience,” he explains.

Devi Sri Prasad, a long-time associate of Hari, is in charge of music , and VT Vijayan handles the editing.

Speaking about the criticism of his movies on social media, Hari says he welcomes all opinions, positive as well as negative, as long as they don’t get personal. “I have seen how personal some of the opinions on social media can get. However, I strongly feel that any opinion, if conveyed in the right manner, needs to be accepted in the same spirit by the creator. I always abide by that.”
