AR Rahman’s ‘Neethanae’ From ‘Mersal’ Is Easy On The Ear

Like most AR Rahman songs, Neethanae takes a little getting used to. The usual ARR elements are missing, and the song seems almost like… Harris Jayaraj, in its use of nonsensical words to fill up space. There’s a bit of everything in this four-and-half minute song. It’s definitely easy on the ear and is likable. The soaring violin gives the song that much needed drama, and when that isn’t enough, the slide guitar does the job.

The lyrics, by Vivek, are in no danger of surpassing his debut effort – Poo Avizhum Pozhudhil from Enakkul Oruvan. It’s a little tame, a little playing-it-safe effort from the young lyricist.

As far as romantic songs go, this one is in a whole new league from previous Vijay numbers such as Manjal Megam (Santhosh Narayanan) and En Jeevan (GV Prakash Kumar). It’s not as soulful, perhaps, but just the fact that it is a Rahman number is sure to satisfy the frenetic fanbase the composer commands.

Starring Vijay, Nithya Menen, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Kajal Aggarwal, the film has Atlee at the helm of things. This is Sri Thenandal Films’ 100th film.
