Weekend Watch: Preview Of Kaatru Veliyidai, 8 Thottakkal, & 1971: Beyond Borders

Here’s our preview of this week’s releases: Kaatru Veliyidai, 8 Thottakkal, and 1971: Beyond Borders

Kaatru Veliyidai

The highly anticipated Mani Ratnam film, Kaatru Veliyidai, will release this Friday, starring Karthi as an Air Force officer and Aditi Rao Hydari as a doctor. With much discussion surrounding teasers released thus far, the lead pair have even asked viewers not to expect another Alaipayuthey, as this film is totally different.

Much of the curiosity surrounding the film is because of the newness of the lead pair. And the music, which has been composed by Mani Ratnam’s muse, AR Rahman.

The movie also stars RJ Balaji, Shraddha Sainath, Rukmini Vijayakumar, and KPAC Lalitha in pivotal roles. Ravi Varman has handled the cinematography, with most of the shooting done in Ooty, Leh, and Ladakh.

8 Thottakkal

This cop-thriller has been helmed by debutante director Sri Ganesh. 8 Thottakkal revolves around eight characters who are linked by a crime scene. With movies made on a shoe-string budget, like Maanagaram, doing well, much is also expected from 8 Thottakkal

Sri Ganesh said the film was inspired by international film-maker Akira Kurosawa’s Stray Dog, which initially made it difficult for him to convince producer Vetrivel Saravanan to bankroll the film.

8 Thottakal stars Nasser and MS Bhaskar and also marks the Tamil debut of Aparna Balamurali, who plays a journalist. Aparna made her cinema debut with the Malayalam movie, Maheshinte Prathikaram in 2016.

1971: Beyond Borders

Director-actor duo Major Ravi and Mohanlal are back, this time with a war movie. 1971: Beyond Borders is the fourth collaboration between Mohanlal and Major Ravi. Mohanlal is also reportedly playing a double role in the movie. The cast includes the memorable Major Mahadevan (Keerthi Chakra and Kurukshetra)
