In Theatres This Week: A Preview

For the third time in a row this year, more than eight films are scheduled to release on Friday. Almost all of them are directed by relative newcomers and produced by small banners. The new ones are expected to compete with Rajathandhiram, which released last week and is faring well at the box office.

Kadavul Paathi Mirugam Paathi

This psychological thriller has Pooja Umashankar in a pivotal role. Directed by the actress’s good friend, Raj Zacharias, Kadavul Paathi Mirugam Paathi went into production with Arya and Aadhi billed as its leads. Eventually, both actors backed out and were replaced by Raj himself and Sethu, who did a star turn in Mynaa. Malayalam composer Rahul Raj composes music.

 

Mooch

Mooch, the horror-drama, is directed by debutant Vinu Bharathi. The movie has Malayalam actor Nithin and Misha Goshal of Vadacurry fame in lead roles. The story follows the lives of two children who are haunted by their mother’s spirit. Child artistes Abi and Diya play important roles, while Jayaraj, brother of director Bharathiraja, debuts as an actor. Newcomer Suhasini plays the role of the ghost. At a press meet, Vinu Bharathi revealed that the film portrays spirits in good light a la Anandhapurathu Veedu. 

Kallapadam

Distributed by director Mysskin, Kallapadam is directed by debutant Vadivel. In an interview to Business Standard, Vadivel said that Kallapadam pays tribute to the dying art form Koothu. The director, cinematographer Santhosh, composer K, and editor Gaugin play themselves in the film. Actress Lakshmi Priya of Sutta Kadhai has a key role in the movie. Vadivel added that the film explores cinema’s growth over other art forms, pegged around a group of friends who try to establish themselves in cinema.

Ahathinai

The romantic drama has actor Varma and Mahima Nambiar, who was last seen in Ennamo Nadakkudhu, in lead roles. Aadukalam Naren and Black Pandi form the supporting cast, while choreographer Sandy appears in a special number. Lyricist Vairamuthu has written all the songs for the project. While speaking to Silverscreen, the director UP Maruthu said that Ahathinai is a “clean love story.”

 

Patra

Directed by Jayanthan, the thriller has newbie actors Mithun Dev, and Vaidhehi. Entrepreneur Sam Paul makes his acting debut in Patra. The audio was launched by Bhagyaraj and S Ve Sekhar recently. Patra is produced by Gandhikumar of GK Cinemas. While Sunoj Velayudhan has handled the camera, Sri Krishna has composed music.

Thilagar

In an interview to the Times of India, Madan, a member of the production house that makes Thilagar, said that the flick is loosely based on a real life incident. The film follows the rivalry between two groups in a village, and drives home the message that violence is not the solution to any problem. Thilagar features debutant Dhruvva and Mridhula Bhaskar, while Kishore of Aadukalam fame appears in an important role. Actress Neetu Chandra, who was last seen in Aadhi Bhagawan, has danced for a special number. The audio launch of Thilagar had several celebrities showing up to support the team.

Iravum Pagalum Varum, which was slated to release two weeks ago, is expected to hit theatres this Friday. The romantic comedy has Mahesh of Angadi Theru fame and Ananya and director A Venkatesh plays a cop. Three other movies join the race too: Aaya Vada Sutta Kathai, Kaalakattam, and Vethu Vettu.
