62nd Filmfare (South) Nominations Announced

The Filmfare award nominees for four South Indian languages – Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada have been announced for the year 2014. The 62nd edition of this award function kicked off in style yesterday with a press meet attended by actor Venkatesh and Filmfare editor Jithesh Pillai.

Kaaviya Thalaivan swept the Tamil section with nominations in all 10 categories – Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor Male, Best Actor Female, Best Actor in Supporting Role (Male), Best Actor in Supporting role (Female), Best Music, Best Lyrics, Best Playback Singer ( Male) and Best Playback Singer (Female). While this film bagged two Vijay Awards, it failed to win the coveted National Award.

Pa. Ranjith’s Madras just missed the mark by getting nominated in nine out of 10 categories which include Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor Male, Best Actor Female, Best Actor in Supporting Role (Male), Best Actor in Supporting role (Female), Best Music, Best Playback Singer (Male) and Best Playback Singer (Female). Post Paruthiveeran, actor Karthi has been continuously nominated by Filmfare under the Best Actor Male category every year.

AR Murugadoss’s Kaththi, which was packed with a social message, has been nominated under seven categories. Actor Vijay has been nominated for Best Actor (Male) and Best Singer (Male). Further, it has also been nominated for Best Film, Best Actor (Female), Best Music, Best Director and Best Lyrics.

Director Velraj’s Velaiyilla Pattathaari, which emerged with five Vijay Awards this year – has been nominated in seven categories: Best Film, Velraj for Best Director, Dhanush and Amala Paul for Best Actor (Male and Female), Samuthirakani and Saranya Ponvannan for Best Supporting Actor (Male and Female) and Anirudh Ravichander for Best Music.

Suseenthiran’s Jeeva has been nominated under two categories for Best Lyrics and Best Playback Singer – Male and Female. Interestingly, all these nominations are for the same song – Ovvondrai Thirudigirai. Lyricist Vairamuthu, singers Karthik and Bhavya Pandit are the nominees.

Journalist-turned-director Raju Murugan’s Cuckoo bagged two nominations – actress Malavika Nair for Best Actor (Female) and Best Lyrics for Manasula Soorakaathu by lyricist Yugabharathi.

Playback singer Uthara Unnikrishnan and lyricist Na Muthukumar, who bagged a National Award each, have been nominated for the song Azhagu (Saivam) for Best Lyrics, and Uthara for Best Playback Singer (Female).

Director R Parthiepan’s Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam, Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda and director Vijay Milton’s Goli Soda have been nominated under one category each.
