As the year ends, we bring you a list of the top 10 Kollywood male and female actors on Twitter and Facebook respectively. This year has seen more social media activity than ever before. The online platform has brought fans close to their favourite Kollywood stars. And given stars direct access to fans. Before and after a film’s release, fans go ballistic on Facebook and Twitter. And stars, especially young actors, love RT-ing (retweeting) every compliment that comes their way.
Of course, Twitter and Facebook aren’t without downsides. Some fans hurl abuses on social media, and spam celebrity timelines, hoping to provoke a reply. Regardless, celebrities have incorporated social media into their public life. Those who haven’t will feel the pressure as 2016 comes around. After all, movie promotions have transformed in the Twitter era. Every new update on a movie’s launch, poster launch, song launch, first look, second look, 23,286th look launch happens on Twitter. A variety of big and small actors hop on the social media bandwagon, trading encouragement and witticisms with their colleagues and fans. Of course, there are actors like STR, who have stayed away from Twitter. Because it distracts them from delivering quality films.

Before we jump into the who’s who of social media, a few disclaimers and observations:
- We only looked at official accounts. And that is the only reason Ajith Kumar isn’t on our list.
- We only looked at mainstream Kollywood actors. Notable Malayalam and Telugu actors who aren’t on our list includes Dulquer Salmaan, Mohanlal, and Mammooty.
Towering above the rest of Twitterati is the Mozart of Madras, AR Rahman. Just like his music, his tweets and updates are subtle, never over the top. Speaking of over the top, we had enough of ‘Rajinikanth did not join Twitter, Twitter joined him’ jokes in 2014. Despite the frenzy that surrounded his (mass) entry into the microblogging site, not much happened on his account. 24 tweets later, @superstarrajini is pretty much MIA on Twitter.
Kollywood’s younger generation made a massive impact this year on social media, and not just with movie promotions. When the Chennai and Cuddalore floods hit, these celebrities made their popularity count by mobilising relief work.
A surprise entry on our Twitter list is Premgi. His film career is at the mercy of his brother. But his banter with users who troll him is entertaining, and gains him followers.
Female stars, surprisingly, have a considerably larger following on Facebook than on Twitter. Since most South Indian actresses act in at least two (Tamil and Telugu) if not three industries at the same time, their popularity is much higher. All the Top 10 actresses on Facebook have a strong presence in both industries. All the actresses also have more likes than their male counterparts on Facebook. Pity the popularity has no bearing on the pay disparity between them and their male co-stars.
Among South Indian actors, Allu Arjun has the most number of likes on his Facebook page (9.5 million). Much of this can be attributed to (M)Allu Arjun’s (!) popularity in Kerala.
