Yogi Babu is expected to headline a new film by Sam Anton. A dog will be Yogi’s constant companion in the movie that the makers are describing as “hostage comedy”. A spokesperson for Yogi confirmed the news.

“Yogi will be seen as the lead. This is his second lead role after Kolamaavu Kokila and he is over the moon. Yogi did not come to the film industry with the idea of being the lead actor. He just wanted to do roles that would guarantee a steady income. And so, for him, this movie offer is very much a surprise. He is very excited about the project,” the spokesperson said.

Sam Anton wrote the story with Yogi Babu in mind. “The script has a lot of space for Yogi to bring in his trademark humour. It’s not a completely mainstream hero role,” the spokesperson added.

The team is reportedly trying to find a female lead for the film. There will be a romantic angle, but it won’t be like Kolamaavu Kokila, the source said.

Not much details are known about the film. But reports mention that the movie is about a security guard who helps rescue people from a hostage situation. The guard’s pet dog aids him in the process.

Sam Anton, who made his debut with the GV Prakash Kumar-starrer Darling, is currently busy with his cop film, 100. He will begin work on the Yogi Babu film soon.

Reports indicate that Antony Reuben, an editor who has worked on movies such as Remo, Sketch, Velaikkaran among others, has stepped in to finance the film. If it does materialise, the movie will be his first production.

Yogi Babu joins a long line of comedians in Tamil cinema who later took on male lead roles in movies. Recent examples of this trend include Vadivelu (23am Pulikesi, Tenaliraman) and Santhanam (Sakka Podu Podu Raja, Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham).
