Women’s March And The Stars Who Walked

Ever since businessman and TV personality Donald J Trump was elected the 45th President of the United States of America, a wave of protests have emerged condemning the new leader’s win and the spate of derogatory comments he’s made on women, minorities and immigrants. Triggered by his hateful comments, particularly the one where he was quoted saying that women can be “grabbed by the p*ssy“, a US-wide Women’s March was organised with millions in attendance advocating the rights of a woman over her body.

Celebrities such as singers Madonna, Alicia Keys, actress Scarlett Johansson, comedian Amy Schumer, actor Joseph Gordon Levitt and even Democratic Party nominee Bernie Sanders took part in the marches. Madonna, who is known for speaking her mind, spoke about ‘blowing up the White House’ and receiving flak for her colourful remark.

Here are the other celebrities who attended the March that took place in all 50 states as a way of showing dissent towards President Trump.

Lena Dunham

Star of TV series Girls, Lena Dunham Instagrammed pictures from the march, including one with Parks and Recreations star Amy Poehler.

Ian McKellan

Attending the Women’s March in London, the Lord of The Rings actor uploaded a photo of himself holding what was possibly the coolest placard – a picture of Patrick Stewart facepalming as Star Trek‘s Jean-Luc Picard. In a note he posted on Twitter, McKellen wrote about the participants in the march expressing their reaction to the new US president. He added, “whose name in schoolyard English means to ‘break wind’ appropriately.”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Actor-producer Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who also works as an activist working to help free Edward Snowden, participated in the march at Los Angeles, wearing a t-shirt echoing his thoughts – ‘Dissent is Patriotic’.

Katy Perry

Singer Katy Perry was also an active participant at the march in Washington, dressed in pink. She referred to the slogan of the march – ‘the p*ssy grabs back’.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Seinfeld actress and currently playing Vice President Selena Meyers in TV series Veep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus was a speaker at the march held in Los Angeles. “An egomaniac in the White House cares nothing about the oppressed, about the disenfranchised or the poor, who attacks with petty, vicious, slanders and self-serving lies. Who is a fool! That’s the woman I play on HBO’s Veep. And president Selena Meyers got nothing on the new real-life President,” she was quoted saying.

Jessica Chastain

Actress Jessica Chastain was seen interacting with participants at the Women’s March in Washington.

Princess Leia

While Star Wars actress, activist, and author Carrie Fisher may have died in December last year, there were several posts of her famous bold character Princess Leia found in the march. Fans paid tribute to the star who often spoke on the importance of Feminism and was known as the ‘smasher of the Patriarchy’ in her own right.

Nick Offerman

Known for his witty one-liners and deadpan expressions in sit-com Park and Recreations, Nick Offerman (best known as Ron Swanson) participated in the march at Sundance, Wyoming.

Calling himself a pretty girl in his caption, Offerman was also found doing his bit to slay patriarchy over Twitter, after Trump supporter and celebrity Piers Morgan tweeted about starting a men’s march against “rabid feminists”. Offerman’s response was an invitation to Morgan instead.
