Here’s a look at the week in theatres:

Maayavan (Tamil)

Maayavan is producer CV Kumar’s directorial debut, featuring Sundeep Kishan in the role of a cop, Lavanya Tripathi, Jackie Shroff, Daniel Balaji and several others. The film was supposed to release in August this year, but got postponed due to financial issues.

In an interview with Silverscreen, CV Kumar talks about how those issues are all in the past now.

““I was very upset that it happened to a film that I was directing for the first time, but sometimes you have to cross these hurdles. A person cannot be in the same track always. These setbacks are what give life some unpredictability, and, therefore, the enthusiasm to look forward to a new day. A lot of friends and relatives helped, I got to realise who was really with me. It was a lot of learning. This, after all, is an industry where people create or mar a person just by talking. But, I’d like to look ahead, and not think of anything negative. I’m happy, I’m past that phase,” he said.

Music is by Ghibran and the script is by Nalan Kumarasamy.

Aruvi (Tamil)

The publicity posters, songs and teaser of Aruvi have piqued a lot of interest, and the trailer gives an insight into a story with a woman in the forefront. She smiles just as easily as she wields a gun, enjoys a solitary smoke on the terrace of her house, and dares a person in uniform to harm her, because she isn’t afraid.

Directed by Arun Prabu Purushothaman, the film stars Aditi Balan, who has had no film connections before this and is a professional lawyer and football player.

In an interview with Silverscreen, the director talks about how Aruvi began.

Aruvi was written in August 2013. More than a strong subject, working on a screenplay that people can relate to is interesting; it is exciting to experiment. The journey has been a roller-coaster, but a fun-filled one.”

The film is produced by SR Prabhu and has music by Bindhu Malini and Vedanth Bharadwaj.

Chennai 2 Singapore (Tamil)

Chennai 2 Singapore is a romantic comedy directed by Singaporean filmmaker Abbas Akbar. The film is about a struggling filmmaker who heads to Singapore in a bid to find financiers for his film. Things go awry for him when he meets a girl.

Theatre artist Gokul Anand plays Harish, along with Malayalam actress Anju Kurien as the female lead. Music composer Ghibran has composed the music and is also one of the producers of the film.

Palli Paruvathile (Tamil)

Directed by Vasudev Bhaskar, the film stars Nandhan Ram, the son of music director Sirpy. Bhaskar, who last directed Meendum Oru Kadhal Kadhai, also directs former child artiste Venba in the film.

Apart from the newcomers, the film will also have director KS Ravikumar playing the role of a teacher. His character is inspired by Vasudev’s real-life school teacher, Sarangan, who was responsible for the success of several of his children.

Monsoon Shootout (Hindi)

Monsoon Shootout’s trailer was India’s first ever interactive trailer that features the dilemma of a rookie cop named Adi (played by Vijay Varma) who has to decide whether to shoot a suspect, Shiva (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) or not. The trailer opens with a violent image of a man chopping off someone’s head with an axe. The scene soon shifts to Adi being recruited and taunted by a senior for following the rules instead of being more brave.

There’s a lot of blood and gun violence promised in this Amit Kumar directorial. Nawazuddin Siddiqui gives off the same killer vibes he had given in last year’s Raman Raghav. Vijay Varma, best known for his chilling performance in Pink, plays the young cop who has to choose between wrong and right, and battle his inner demons.

The film also stars Tanishtha Chatterjee, Neeraj Kabi, and Geetanjali Thapa.
