Few composers have had a career as spectacular as Amit Trivedi. From winning a National Award for his second album (Dev D) to having his soundtrack appreciated even when the movie wasn’t (Bombay Velvet and Shaandaar), the composer has made his presence felt over almost all his works. Be it Ishaqzaade, Udta Punjab or the recent Manmarziyaan, his songs have always stood out for defying convention and their rawness. As the composer’s new movie Kedarnath is due for release next week, here’s a look at the few occasions when his songs seemed to tread the beaten path.
‘Iktara’ – Wake Up Sid (2009)
A song that became synonymous with the movie, it was the only track from the album that was composed by the music director and stood its ground against Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s soundtrack. It became an instant hit among the listeners courtesy Kavitha Seth’s rendition and the minimal use of instruments.
‘Aazadiyaan’ – Udaan (2010)
The song appears towards the climax of the movie and is intended to be uplifting. While it serves every bit of that purpose immaculately, it also sounds similar to those rousing tracks often used as markers for victory – especially one won against all odds.
‘English Vinglish’ – English Vinglish (2012)
Used more like a narrative tool, the song depicts the progression of events and is hence relegated to the background. Though it manages to match the energy of the activity on screen, the rhythm followed by the beats is strictly basic. And, the chorus only adds to the monotony.
‘Chavanprash’ – Bhavesh Joshy (2018)
Though there was a separate movie version of the song, it was the video shot with Arjun Kapoor and used as an item for promotional purposes that gained popularity. What ought to have otherwise been an Amit Trivedi song is reduced to a mere item song with its typical template of fast-paced rhythm, naughty lyrics and a catchy hook.
