Vada Chennai Jukebox Gives Voice To North Madras

The makers of Vetrimaaran’s Vada Chennai, a gangster drama starring Dhanush, Aishwarya Rajesh, Andrea Jeremiah, released the film’s audio on Sunday.

Composed by Santhosh Narayanan, the album comprises of eight songs. The lyrics have been penned by as many as six people – Gana Bala, G. Rokesh, Vivek, Shenoy Nagar Shanmugam, Arivu and Sindhai Nathan. Much like the title of the movie which translates to ‘North Chennai’ – an area devoid of any development and notorious for gang wars – the soundtrack too has a rustic feel to it.

No song describes this point better than ‘Goindhammavaala’ does. Sung by Dhanush, the song does away with electronic instruments and merely has a chorus and percussion instruments accompanying it. Even songs like ‘Karkuzhal Kadavaiye’ which comes as an exception in this regard manages to retain the rustic feel of the album.

Vada Chennai comes as the composer’s 25th album. The songs have been mastered by Alex Gordon.

‘Maadila Nikkira Maankutty’, which according to the composer is a tribute to ‘all the lover boys in town’, is the song from the album that is typically Santhosh Narayanan-esque. Reminiscent of the composer’s own ‘Kannamma’ from Jigarthanda, it is unconventional in rendition yet catchy in tune.

Apart from Dhanush, the movie also stars Aishwarya Rajesh, Samuthirakani, Andrea Jeremiah and director Ameer in lead roles. Dhanush, who has also co-produced the movie, plays Anbu – a carrom player with dreams of making it into the national level competition.

The movie marks Vetrimaaran’s return to directing after a gap of two years. His last directorial venture came in 2016 with Visaranai which was India’s official entry for Oscars. Vada Chennai marks the third collaboration between the actor and director. Apart from the director’s debut movie Polladhavan, Dhanush had also starred in Vetrimaran’s Aadukalam which won the duo National Awards in their respective categories.

Jointly produced by Dhanush, Vetrimaaran and Lyca Productions, Vada Chennai releases on October 17.
