In response to financier Raghunandhan’s son, Maithreya’s claim that the project was first offered to him, and that he paid the director an advance, actor Udhayanidhi Stalin reportedly said, “The producer also approached us saying that the script was narrated to them. But I told them that the same script was narrated to me a few years back.”

He said, “As I’m not the producer of Psycho, couldn’t take any decision on the matter. Later, when I asked Mysskin, he told me that he will deal them through legal proceedings. We have almost finished the shoot, only fifteen days left in the film.”

Actor Maithreya, whose original name is Shyam, had earlier released a video saying that Mysskin had got an advance for the film and cheated him. He said, “Psycho was created for me. It was written with me in mind. Mysskin sir knows this very well. I met several people to understand the role.”

“We even did a test shoot and photo shoot. Mysskin sir appreciated my work on the shoot. He even sent my father a message in which he said that I would do justice to the way he has written the protagonist’s role,” he added.

Following this, on October 14, 2018, Raghunandan got an interim injunction from the Madras High Court, restraining Mysskin from directing or releasing any film with a story line similar to what was narrated to him. The case came up for hearing on December 24, 2018, and the court banned Mysskin from directing or releasing crime thrillers.

The film also faced a controversy when a popular Tamil magazine stated that Udhayanidhi Stalin will be playing a role that Shanthnu Bhagyaraj was offered and did not take up. Shanthnu made it clear that he did not miss the project on purpose, but had certain other reasons. The actor’s wife Keerthi and actor Karthi Prassana came to his defense and said that the claims were baseless.

Psycho features Aditi Rao Hydari and Nithya Menon as the female leads. Cinematography for the film is by PC Sreeram, and music is by Ilaiyaraaja. On the work front, Udhayanidhi Stalin is awaiting the release of Kanne Kalaimaane directed by Seenu Ramasamy. The film is set to hit screens on February 22.
