Produced by Sivakarthikeyan under the banner Sivakarthikeyan Productions, the film is a sports drama set against a rural backdrop. It revolves around a village girl who dreams about becoming a cricketer, but is criticised by the people around her. Aishwarya Rajesh, who is known for her rooted characters, will be playing a cricketer, while Sathyaraj plays her father who is a farmer.
Apart from the leads, the film also stars Blade Shankar, Ilavarasu, Ramadoss, Rama and Savari Muthu in pivotal roles while Sivakarthikeyan plays a cameo. The actor has also sung the track ‘Vayadi Petha Pulla’ along with his daughter Aaradhana. The song became a huge hit after its release, with 60 million views and 600K + likes on Youtube.
Sivakarthikeyan is likely to have a cameo in the film which is expected to be an important role to the script. Actress Aishwarya was professionally trained for 60 days in cricket to prepare for the role. Talking about the film and her role for a TV show, Aishwarya said she will play a bowler.
Music for the film has been composed by Dhibu Ninan Thomas of Marakatha Nanaiyam fame, and the album features a romantic love song Othaiyadi Paadhaiyila sung by Anirudh Ravichander. The song is pegged to be a folk number comprising of a mix of piano and strings and traditional instruments like Thavil and Nadaswaram. The lyrics have been penned by the director himself. The film was recently certified with clean ‘U’ in the censor.
The title of the film – Kanaa – which translates to ‘dream’ in English, comes with the tagline ‘Dream Big’.
Speaking about the film, Arunraja said: “I have done a lot of research on this subject. I observed that while 1,000 boys attend cricket division selection matches, only 60 girls participate in the women’s cricket division matches. My script will throw light on the struggles of one such courageous woman. Though it is a sports film, it is also an emotional drama involving a man and his daughter who aspires to become a cricketer.”
