The release of actor/filmmaker P Samuthirakani’s Thondan has been postponed. The film was scheduled to release on May 5, but an announcement from Samuthirakani stated that the film will be released later.

Speculations have been rife that Samuthirakani decided to hold his film’s release due to Baahubali 2‘s roaring success at the box office. Thondan is the second film to back out from its May 5 release, the other being Yeidhavan starring Kalaiyarasan and Satna Titus.
According to a Sify News report, Baahubali 2 hadn’t created any record on its opening day in Tamil Nadu, but managed to make up for it in the weekend. Bearing this in mind, several theater owners are reluctant to screen any other new Tamil films this week.
Thondan is based on a real-life incident. Samuthirakani, in a recent Facebook Live session, said that while his previous films were geared more towards the family audience, Thondan will have a message that will appeal to the younger audience as well. “It definitely is for the younger audience as they would take some points out of it after watching it. Let me not say it is for men, it also caters to women. The movie is sure to change perspectives of a lot of people,” he said.

The film will be the cinematic representation of K Sonali, a 22-year-old girl from Manamadurai in Sivagangai district. Sonali was savagely attacked with a wooden log by P Udayakumar, a senior from her college. Investigations revealed that Udayakumar had proposed to Sonali. She had rejected his advances.

The film stars Vikranth and Sunaina in lead roles, with Samuthirakani essaying a pivotal role as an ambulance driver named Maha Vishnu. Unlike what the title suggests, Thondan is not a political film.
