There’s a dialogue in Thappad’s trailer that has even non filmy types making a connection. That line (about people in love hitting each other) is eerily similar to something Sandeep Vanga Reddy, director of Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh said in a bid to ‘justify’ the actions of his protagonists.
In complete contrast with the ‘Thappad se dar nahin lagta saheb, pyar see lagta hai”, brand of cinema, Taapsee starrer Thappad is about a woman who says enough at the first strike.

Among our most favourite things to do when a film trailer like this releases is read Youtube comments. Almost all comments that express worries about families breaking, about why movies about women “misusing laws” (as if men are saints and do not misuse any law at every chance, in all walks of life) are not made, asking women to not marry men if they don’t want to be hit (yeah), are all courtesy men. To be fair, several men have also commented in praise of the film’s subject. But the difference in women’s comments is telling. There is a deep sense of empathy with Taapsee’s character among them. Many doff their hats to Taapsee for playing a woman who will shake the system down for one slap, even when her trauma is trivialised as, “Just one slap?”
