The story of Sukumara Kurup has made it to Malayalam pop-culture many times before. In 1984, NH47, a thriller directed by Baby, was based on the murder of Chacko, and Kurup’s abscodence. TG Ravi played Kurup in the film. In 2015, Adoor Gopalakrishnan loosely adapted the story for his film Pinneyum, in which Dileep played the protagonist who goes into hiding after murdering a stranger. The legendary case keeps returning to the public sphere time and again, with people claiming that they have spotted Kurup’s lookalikes in different places.

Srinath entered the film industry with Second Show (2012), which also launched Dulquer’s acting career. Post the success of the low-budget gangster-drama, Srinath made Koothara (2014), a coming-of-age drama that failed to make a mark at the box-office.
