Gangai Amaren Trolled For Posting A Meme About ‘Petta’ Single

Music Director Gangai Amaren at Mirchi Music Awards 2013 - Grand Jury Meet Event

Gangai Amaren’s social media post on the recently released Petta single – ‘Marana Mass’, has proved to be controversial. The singer posted a meme about the song, referring to the reduced role offered to singer SP Balasubrahmanyam in the track. The vocals of Anirudh Ravichander, also the music composer of the film, can be heard through a majority of the song. SPB appears only for a few minutes.

Amaren’s meme referred to this, drawing the ire of fans of SPB, who assumed that Amaran was mocking the singer. The meme makes use of a screen grab from Sarkar, in which Vijay’s character Sundar Ramaswamy comes back to India to vote. Someone else has already voted in his name. This imagery is used to draw a parallel with the Petta song.

A fan wrote in the comments section of the post and said that Anirudh’s portions are written in a way that celebrates Rajinikanth’s character in the film. So, it does not make sense for SPB to render these portions. SPB sings for Rajini in the second half.

The fan goes on to write that Amaran probably did not mean to insult SPB and that his intent was to simply make fun of the situation.

A majority of the comments on Amaren’s post reflect that the fans feel the same way. SP Balasubramaniam singing for Rajinikanth after four years (they last collaborated for Lingaa) was made much of ahead of Marana Mass’ release. And the final product disappointed fans who thought they would hear more of SPB.

Amaren responded to a fan asking him to post responsibly on social media as he had gotten older. He used lyrics from the iconic Padayappa song – ‘En Peru Padayappa’ (also sung by SPB), to make his point.

He also wrote that he was very excited to hear the song as it featured one of his close friends (SPB) singing for another. When he heard the song, he felt that it would’ve been greater if SPB had sung the entire portion. He was quick to mention that Anirudh had done his part beautifully.

SP Balasubrahmanyam’s songs for Rajinikanth have become iconic. Till recently, the singer has been a major part of the soundtrack of Rajini ‘s films. When Rajini collaborated with Pa Ranjith for Kaala and Kabali, the singer was not a part of the album. It is with director Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta that the SPB – Rajini combo has come back.
