In a report about Bhansali obtaining the remake rights to the movie, a source says, “There is a buzz in the trade that SLB and T-Series have taken the rights of the film. There is no official confirmation that it is a remake and the makers are searching for a date in the second half of the year to release the movie.”

However, another report states that 50% of the movie has already been shot. The film is directed by the National Award winning director Mangesh Hadawale who previously directed the yet to be released Nawazzuddin Siddiqui-starrer Dekh Indian Circus.

The director is believed to have reworked the script too. “The film is not expected to be a fantasy with stunning visuals and intense characters like Bhansali’s earlier productions. It’s a simple and pure story about middle-class life and the impact of first love that goes beyond the boy-meets-girl routine,” said a source.

Malaal is expected to reach theatres by April.

Directed by Selvaraghavan, 7G Rainbow Colony featured Ravi Krishna and Sonia Agarwal in lead roles. The movie was about a Tamil boy, from the eponymous locality, who falls for a North Indian girl. Shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, the movie went on to become a big success after release. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music won him the Filmfare Award for the year.

Subsequently, the movie was remade into Bengali, Odia and Kannada.

There had been reports about Mani Ratnam planning to remake the movie in Hindi, with Vivek Oberoi as the lead. Later, reports also emerged that Vivek Oberoi had acquired the remake rights of the movie. However, the rumours were not true.
