After teasing viewers through an Instagram video in which actor Madhavan said that being unaware of certain stories was tantamount to being ignorant of one’s country, the teaser for Rocketry in which the actor plays the role of Nambi Narayanan, was revealed today.
Nambi Narayanan is a former ISRO scientist who was falsely charged with espionage in 1994. After a prolonged legal battle, his name was cleared and the Supreme Court recently ordered the Kerala government to pay him a compensation of Rs 50 lakhs.
Titled Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, the teaser of the movie has Madhavan gazing out of a prison cell as India launches its first satellite headed for Mars. While Mangalyaan was a success during the first attempt itself and was achieved at a much lower cost than other countries, Madhavan as Nambi Narayanan states in the teaser that India had the potential to achieve the feat 20 years back.
Narayanan was wrongly charged with leaking defence secrets in 1994 and spent 55 days in jail. A couple of years later, the CBI, and the Supreme Court dismissed the charges against him.
Directed by Ananth Mahadevan of Gour Hari Dastaan and Aksar fame, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect will focus on the scientist’s life and the ISRO espionage case. It has been made in Tamil, Hindi and English owing to R Madhavan’s pan-Indian appeal. Nambi Narayanan also wrote his autobiography in Malayalam titled ‘Ormakalude Bhramanapatham’ which was published in October last year.

Madhavan, whose last full-fledged role was in 2017 with Vikram Vedha, also has the Telugu movie Savyasachi gearing for release. Starring Naga Chaitanya in the lead role, the movie will see Madhavan in negative shades. The actor also makes a special appearance in Aanand L Rai’s Shah Rukh Khan starrer Zero that is due for release in December this year.
