The journalist turned filmmaker has directed two films, Cuckoo and Joker. The former tells the love story of blind couple and their life, while the latter talks about a hard-hitting truth in society through a satirical screenplay. The director  is known for his outspokenness on politics and current issues. Recently, at the Gypsy single track launch, Raju Murugan said, “I referred to music composer Santhosh Narayanan as a ‘Thozhar’ (Comrade). Many have questioned me for it. The word ‘Thozhar’ doesn’t belong to one political group or so. It’s a wonderful word and we can refer it to anyone who fights against any injustice in society and stands for rights.”

The song ‘Very Very Bad’ from Gypsy, which questions the government’s attitude about activists, featured many real-life social activists and politicians, including environmental activists Piyush Manush and Mugilan, political activist Thirumurugan Gandhi, veteran politician Nallakannu, Balabharathi, student activist Valarmathi, and transgender activist Grace Banu. The travel film stars actor Jiiva and debutant actress Natasha Singh in the lead roles, and is produced by S Ambethkumar.
