Pariyerum Perumaal and Peranbu will be screened at the 49th International Film Festival of India in Goa. In all, four Tamil movies have been selected to compete at the festival.
Directed by Mari Selvaraj, Pariyerum Perumaal stars Kathira, Ananthi and Yogi Babu, and is produced by director Pa. Ranjith under his banner Neelam Productions. Like other Ranjith films, casteism and caste politics, caste pride feature big in Pariyerum Perumaal, with a title card that read ‘caste and religion are against humanity’ at the start of the movie.

The film features music by Santhosh Narayanan and was released on September 28. It is still running in theatres, with certain select screens holding special shows for the movie given that its story and performance has been generating good buzz.

Peranbu – the other movie selected for IFFI is directed by Ram, who was Mari Selvaraj’s mentor. Starring Mammootty in the lead role, Peranbu is a story about a father-daughter relationship. Produced by P.L Thenappan, with music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, the film also features Anjali Ameer, a trans-woman actor from Kerala in an important role. Peranbu also stars Samuthirakani and Anjali, who plays Mammootty’s wife. Though it has premiered at prestigious festivals like Rotterdam Film Festival and Shanghai Film Festival, the movie is yet to be released theatrically in India.

Two other Tamil films will also be screened at the festival. Toilet directed by Chezhiyan and Baaram directed by Siva Chelvan.
The 49th edition of IFFI will be held from November 20 over the course of 10 days and will end on November 28. Golden Peacock is the premium prize awarded for the best movie at the festival. Held for the first time in 1952 in Mumbai, the festival has had Goa as it permanent host since 2004. This year’s edition of the festival will witness commercial movies from across the country. Representing Hindi cinema are Padmaavat, Raazi and Tiger Zinda Hai, Mahanati for Telugu, and Ee. Ma. Yau, Sudani from Nigeria and Poomaram for Malayalam.
The festival courted controversy last year when its jury chairman Sujoy Ghosh resigned over the government’s ban on two films – Nude and S.Durga from playing at the festival.
