Padmaavat To Release Across India After Supreme Court Stays Ban By Four States

The Supreme Court has allowed the release of Padmaavat across India and stayed the ban on the film’s release imposed by four states – Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.

The apex court reportedly said it is the duty of the states to maintain law and order and that creative content is an inseparable aspect of article 19 (1), freedom of speech and expression. Harish Salve, who represented the Padmaavat team, had argued that if states are banning a film, then it is destroying federal structure.

“Request the central government to pass a direction to the states for a better and an effective step and solution,” said the senior advocate, as quoted by ANI.

The producers of the film had filed a plea in the Supreme Court after the four states had banned the film from releasing. Their plea argued that the government of the four states couldn’t ban the film especially when the apex court stated that the film’s screening can only be stopped if there is a law and order situation developing.

The film was originally titled Padmavati but the makers were forced to change the title owing to the pressure from several right-wing outfits. The makers also recently released a disclaimer stating that the film was merely a work of fiction.

Deepika Padukone plays Rani Padmini in the film, with Shahid Kapoor playing Maharawal Ratan Singh, her husband. Ranveer Singh plays the role of Alauddin Khilji. Jointly produced by Bhansali Productions and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Padmaavat is based on the legendary queen from the epic ‘Padmavat’ written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540 CE. The film is scheduled to release on January 25.
