New Amsterdam: Anupam Kher’s Latest Hollywood Outing

Anupam Kher announced his participation in a new show for NBC called New Amsterdam. He tweeted that he would be essaying the role of Dr Kapoor.

Kher is no foreigner to international projects. Even before actresses like Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra made their foray into Hollywood, Kher had been doing steady work in the west.

He started with small parts in cross-over and independent films like Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, it was only in David.O.Russel’s 2012 movie Silver Linings Playbook that Kher came to the viewer’s attention. Boasting a stellar cast that included Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Di Niro and Jacki Weaver, all of whom were nominated for the Oscars (with Lawrence winning), Kher’s role of Dr Patel, the psychiatrist who treated Cooper, though small in length, was appreciated.

His next major role came five years later. One of the most acclaimed films of 2017, The Big Sick saw Kher essay the role of Kumail Nanjiani’s father. In between, he also starred in Sense8, a science fiction television series created by Wachowski brothers, the makers of the Matrix films.

He was also seen alongside Russel Peters in the Canadian TV show The Indian Detective. Meanwhile, he has an array of exciting projects lined up for the future.

He has already finished shooting for Hotel Mumbai, a film depicting the story of the terror attack on Mumbai’s Hotel Taj. Starring Dev Patel and Armie Hammer, Kher essays the role of the chief chef Hemanth Oberoi.

He also stars in Mrs. Wilson – a spy-drama based on the memoir of actor Ruth Wilson’s grandmother Kher had already shared a picture from the set. The series produced by BBC One network sees Kher alongside Game of Thrones actor Ian Glein. The shooting for the show is currently under progress in Belfast.

He was also nominated for a BAFTA for his role in the 2017 TV movie The Boy With The Topknot. Back home, he is working on the political drama, The Accidental Prime Minister – based on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
