Based on Rudyard Kipling’s novel of the same name, this Hindi version will feature Abhishek Bachchan as Bagheera, Kareena Kapoor as Kaa, Anil Kapoor as Baloo, Madhuri Dixit as Nisha, Jackie Shroff as Shere Khan, among others, according to a Netflix press release. Frieda Pinto retains the role of Messua from the English version.

The original cast comprised of Christian Bale as Bagheera, Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan, Cate Blanchett as Kaa, Rohan Chand as Mowgli and Matthew Rhys as Lockwood.

Talking about the movie’s PG – 13 rating, the director had said in an interview “It was always meant to be PG-13, and this allows us to go deeper, with darker themes, to be scary and frightening in moments. The violence between animals is not gratuitous, but it’s definitely there. This way of going allows us to get the film out without compromise.”

Specialized in motion-capture roles, Serkis has played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings series, Caesar in Planet of The Apes series and Captain Haddock in The Adventures of Tintin. Apart from directing the movie, Serkis will also be acting as Baloo in Mowgli: Legend of The Jungle.

Walt Disney had released a version of the story as another live-action movie titled The Jungle Book in 2016. Directed by Jon Favreau, the movies emerged as one of the highest grossing movies of the year and won the Academy Award for the Best Visual Effects that year. It featured Neel Sethi in the role of Mowgli, Bill Murray as Baloo, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera and Idris Elba as Shere Khan.
