This is Parari’s second directorial, after KL10-Pathu (2015), a romantic comedy. He was involved in the writing of acclaimed films such as Virus (2019) and Sudani From Nigeria (2018). Virus was directed and produced by Aashiq Abu. In 2018, he won a Kerala state film award for the best screenplay for Sudani From Nigeria.

Thallumala is known to be a comedy set in Ponnani, a coastal town in Kerala’s Malappuram district. The title is a hat tip to the Mala genre of Arabi-Malayalam songs, written in praise of Sufi saints or about spirituality.

Musician Sushin Shyam, who worked on Virus and Kumbalangi Nights this year, will compose the music for Thallumala. Editor Saiju Sreedharan, yet another regular collaborator of Aashiq Abu, is also part of the project. The film is set to release in theatres by September 2020.
