Two movies have been announced to be based on the life of Kunjali Marikkar IV – the fourth and last of the naval chiefs who was deployed to defend the seas against Portuguese, from 1507-1600, by the Samoothiri of Calicut.
The first one was announced by Santhosh Sivan on last year’s Kerala Piravi Day, November 1. The shoot for Santhosh’s Mammootty-starrer hasn’t begun yet.
A little after April this year, Priyadarshan announced that his movie starring Mohanlal, would also be based on Marikkar’s life.
According to a ToI report, Santhosh Sivan had clarified that Priyadarshan decided to go forward with the movie after realizing that his movie would take time to start. He had said, sea warfare would be a major part of Priyadarshan’s version – “Almost 40% of the movie will be shot on the sea.”
“History says that the four Kunjali Marakkars have served the Zamorin for 98 years, with Kunjali Marakkar IV occupying the post for the last 12 years. Even though we are doing the film in Malayalam, it will be made with a pan-Indian appeal.
Marakkar – Arabikkadalinte Simham stars Bollywood actor Suneil Shetty and Tamil actor Arjun Sarja. Pranav Mohanlal is also reported to be making a cameo appearance in the movie. Manju Warrier, Keerthy Suresh and Kalyani Priyadarshan play the female leads in the movie.
Sabu Cyril is the art-director and Thirru is the cinematographer for the movie. Production is by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas. Santhosh.T.Kuruvilla and C.J.Roy will be co-producers of the movie. The movie will be shot in Ramoji Film City – Hyderabad, Ooty and Rameshwaram.
