Controversy surrounding Mersal has taken a political turn. After Tamil Nadu BJP’s demand of removal of scenes pertaining to GST and demonetisation failed, H Raja, spokesperson and national secretary of the party has tweeted actor Vijay’s voter ID card and saying ‘truth is bitter.’

Referring Vijay as Joseph Vijay and targeting him for being Christian is a new low for BJP. H Raja, in an interview to The Indian Express, also claimed that “may be producer Hema Rukmani also a Christian.”
“Everyone has the right to criticise the BJP government on any medium. But the criticism should be based on facts,” he was quoted as saying.
Raja’s criticism came after Tamilisai Soundararajan, BJP Tamil Nadu chief, slammed Vijay for his dialogues on GST in Mersal. She said, “Vijay is intentionally maligning the reputation and good work of our Prime Minister. He wants to enter politics and so he is trying to get the attention of people by criticising GST and Digital India.”
The makers released an official statement yesterday saying that the film has not been made to hurt anybody or government and they also said that they are ready to remove the controversial scenes from the film. “We have met BJP leaders and explained our opinion and they also accepted our explanation,” read the statement.
In response to H Raja’s tweet, Vijay’s father SA Chandrashekar termed the attack as “childish”.
In the middle of this, support for Vijay grew.
