Talking to IE, the director said that his movie, despite possessing situational humour is designed as a thriller. “Mera Naam Shaji is relatively different in tone to AAA and KRR, in spite of the situational humour it contains. It’s more of a thriller and addresses a less-discussed issue experienced by a certain section of society. It’s something that only a few of us are aware of.”

Interestingly, Nadirshah’s debut film Amar Akbar Anthony had touched upon the topic of sexual assault against children.

Dileep Ponnan, the writer of the movie also corroborated that the movie features a thriller format. “Mera Naam Shaji is completely different from Nadirshah’s earlier movies. This is a comedy thriller. In the sense that the plot is filled with suspense rather than stunts and killings,” the writer was quoted by Mathrubhoomi. Ponnan is best known for directing the Urvashi starrer Kathayile Nayika.

Mera Naam Shaji features Biju Menon, Asif Ali and Baiju. It has been reported that the characters are from different parts of Kerala. While Baiju’s character belongs to Trivandrum, Asif Ali is from Kochi and Biju Menon is from Kozhikode. A funny element in the film may be the different dialects that the actors speak.

Their roles as a father and son in Anuraga Karikkin Vellam was widely appreciated.

Nikhila Vimal, who played the female lead in last year’s Vineeth Sreenivasan starrer Aravindante Adhithikal, plays the lead in Mera Naam Shaji. Actor Sreenivasan also has an important role.
