In a televised BBC interview, while promoting his new film Gold, the actor said, “Well, they don’t have a choice now, he’s our President. It’s very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time that we’ve ever had. At the same time, it’s time for us to embrace and shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him over the next four years.”

The New York Times reports that while this interview faded away, extreme right-winged news site – Breitbart News – picked it up and republished it as an article titled ‘Matthew McConaughey to Hollywood: ‘Embrace’ Donald Trump‘. The news has since been picked up by other news site and has led to a wave of confusion in fans of the actor regarding his statement.

McConaughey’s comments appear far more supportive amid the scores of protest and dissent expressed towards the new President, including the boycotting of Oscars by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi.

In the Golden Globes and SAG Awards held recently, many Hollywood stars called out President Trump’s racist plans and hate speeches, with Meryl Streep receiving a standing ovation for her speech against Trump. The new President is currently facing flak for calling a “Muslim Ban” order in the country which bars citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US for a period of 90 day.
