The trailer starts with Naren’s police officer character getting killed and soon Mammootty is called by his father Nedumudi Venu to save him and the people of the islet of Paambin Thuruthu from the villains.

Like the recently released Mohanlal starrer Lucifer, the story of Madhura Raja too has political undercurrents to it. Jagapathi Babu’s villain character announces his plans to contest the elections. If Lucifer talked about the drug menace, Madhura Raja touches upon the issue of illicit liquor.

Madhura Raja marks the coming together of director Vyshakh, scriptwriter Udayakrishna and stunt master Peter Hein. The trio had previously worked on Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan, which was one of the highest grossing Malayalam films. This film is rumoured to be the costliest in Mammootty’s career.

While Mammootty, as expected, is shown engaged in stunt sequences, it is refreshing to see Anusree, the female lead of the movie, follow suit. Tamil actor Jai, who makes his Malayalam debut with the film, is also seen landing a few kicks and punches. Also marking her Mollywood debut is Sunny Leone, who makes a special appearance in the film through a song.

The visuals with its warm tone exude quality and the movie boasts of a scale that is palpable in the scenes involving large crowds.

Kalabhavan Shajon, who played a politician in Lucifer, repeats a similar role here. Baiju Ezhupunna plays Mammootty’s right hand in the film. Other supporting characters include Siddique, Angamaly Diaries fame Anna Rajan, Ramesh Pisharody, Aju Varghese, Vijaya Raghavan and Salim Kumar.

Pokkiri Raja, written by Udayakrishna and Siby K Thomas and directed by Vyshakh released in 2010 and went on to become a huge success. In Madhura Raja, Mammootty reprises his role of Raja from the original. While the original movie featured Prithviraj as Mammootty’s brother and Shriya Saran as the former’s girlfriend, neither of them will be seen in the new movie. Also, Madhura Raja will not be carrying forward the story of Pokkiri Raja and will be a standalone film.

Madhura Raja is produced by Nelson Ipe. Music for the movie is composed by Gopi Sundar. The movie is slated for release later this month.
